The Gumroad Bridge Between Jobs
The Story
After leaving The Hustle, Alex Garcia joined Gumroad part-time as Co-Head of Marketing specifically to fund his life and business while building Marketing Examined (Source 1). It was a deliberate choice: join a company that helps creators generate income from their passions, while being a creator himself (Source 3).
During this period, he also launched Growth Marketing Examined, a paid version of his newsletter priced at $297 per year on Gumroad (Source 2). This was in 2021. He later raised the price, but eventually shut it down entirely in 2023 (Source 1).
The paid newsletter served a dual purpose: revenue to sustain him during the bridge period, and proof of concept that his audience would pay for deeper marketing content (Source 3).
Lesson for Creators
Garcia’s bridge strategy was deliberate: take a part-time role at a creator-aligned company (Gumroad), launch a paid product on that same platform, and use both to fund the free newsletter’s growth. The paid newsletter was scaffolding, not the final structure. When sponsorship revenue surpassed what the paid tier generated, he removed it. Not every product you launch needs to be permanent. Some exist to get you to the next stage.
